Citizenship
The process of becoming a U.S. citizen, also known as naturalization, is a significant step in the immigration journey. If you are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) and would like to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, Martinez Immigration Law PLLC can help.
You may qualify for naturalization if you:
have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years
or
have been a permanent resident for at least 3 years and are married to a U.S. citizen
or
have served in the U.S. armed forces.
Whether you qualify under one of these categories, or under a less common category, citizenship isn’t automatically granted. USCIS considers many factors—the amount of time you have spent outside the United States, any criminal history you may have, and the way in which you obtained your permanent resident status, to name a few. Depending on the complexity of your case, it may be helpful to work with an attorney to ease the burden on you, ensure the best chance of success, and avoid potential immigration problems in the future. After meeting with you and hearing your story, we’ll identify the best course of action, select the correct forms, complete them accurately, and file them quickly.
Interview
A USCIS interview is part of the naturalization process. Because this is often stressful for our clients, we help them prepare, and we also attend the interview with them. We find this support gives our clients the confidence they need to be comfortable throughout the experience.
Naturalization Test
Another part of the process that may cause anxiety is the naturalization test. The test is divided into two parts, English and Civics, and is given at the time of the interview. As with
the interview, we make sure our clients have the resources to help them succeed, including these study guides from the USCIS website. Also on the USCIS website is this video, which explains what to expect with both the naturalization test and interview.
Every immigrant’s path to citizenship is unique. If there are issues specific to your case that may require additional attention, we will talk with you about your goals and concerns, help you understand what options are available, and recommend the best path forward.
